For 55 years, Older Americans Month (OAM) has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to our communities. Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, every May offers opportunity to hear from, support, and celebrate our nation’s elders. This year’s OAM theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes the importance of being active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. You are never too old (or too young) to participate in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

At Wichita Family Dental, we seek to educate patients of every age about the benefits of good oral health. As we age, our mouths change. It can be more difficult for older patients to recognize oral health issues as the nerves may shrink and teeth may become less sensitive. We are at a higher risk of gum disease, dry mouth, and oral cancer as we age. In addition, oral health issues can be indicative of other chronic health conditions, so regular visits to the dentist are essential for older patients.

Here are our tips for maintaining oral health as you age:

  1. Keep your regular dental checkups as they will help you address potential issues before they become major problems. Get your annual oral cancer screening. At Wichita Family Dental, your screening is part of your hygiene appointment.
  2. Brush your teeth twice a day using a toothbrush with soft bristles. Floss between your teeth to prevent decay. If you wear dentures, clean them daily.
  3. Be aware of changes in your mouth. If you notice unusual bumps or sores, contact your dentist immediately.

24-Hour Dentures

Have you been thinking about dentures? At Wichita Family Dental, we offer both complete and immediate dentures. Complete dentures are for patients who have lost all of their teeth. Immediate dentures are for patients who still have some natural teeth. Both complete and immediate dentures can be completed in just one day. Our immediate dentures require approximately 5 hours for imaging, creation, and placement while complete dentures require approximately 8 hours. Those who get immediate dentures will return to the office after 6 months for realignment to make sure the fit is perfect. Wichita Family Dental also offers flippers, or partial dentures. These can be completed in one day as well.

Dentures at Wichita Family Dental are of the highest quality. We offer heat injected dentures which have a 15% tighter fit than cold pour dentures. They are less porous, have a smoother appearance, and are 100% customizable. Your teeth can be made in a wide variety of shapes and colors. You will love your new smile!

At Wichita Family Dental, we also offer same-day denture repair and realignment. We are happy to realign or repair dentures for all patients – including those who had their dentures placed at other offices. If you damage your denture, please call us to schedule an appointment for repair as soon as possible. DO NOT use superglue to repair it yourself as you will permanently damage the denture.

Help Wichita Family Dental Battle “Monster Mouth:” February 2018

In honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Wichita Family Dental would like to do our part by stressing the importance of promoting good oral health to the families and children within our community, and beyond.

Startling statistics from the Office of the Surgeon General (2018) have found that on average, American students miss approximately 51 million hours of school each year due to oral health problems. Yikes. This means that hundreds of thousands of school-aged children are missing out on valuable instruction time - especially in early grades where reading and math are the fundamental building blocks for future learning. What’s more alarming is the fact that a reported 17 million of those children go without dental care each year!

For the past 77 years, The American Dental Association (ADA) has been raising awareness for National Children’s Dental Month and the importance of children and adolescents developing and maintaining proper oral care from an early age. Not only has the program increased awareness in oral health care, but it has been successfully promoting healthy smiles for kids since 1941.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), it is recommended that children have their first dental exam no later than 1-year of age.  During these early visits, it’s crucial for parents and caregivers to address and review any oral health concerns or habits ranging from tooth decay, sealants, thumb sucking, and easing a child's anxiety before and during dental visits.

Pediatric Dental Visits Are Important.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has found that more than 50% of children will be affected by tooth decay before 5-years of age.

Teach Your Kids the 2-2-2 Rule.

A simple way to keep your child's teeth healthy: visit your dentist TWO times a year; brush and floss TWO times a day for TWO whole minutes.

Tricks to Get Your Kids to Brush Their Teeth:

Our dentists at Wichita Family Dental recommend the “tell, show, do” model:

  • Tell: Explain in age-appropriate terminology, how to brush and floss and how these actions keep teeth clean and healthy.
  • Show: Let your children watch you brush and floss your own teeth.
  • Do: Maintain a regular routine and help children brush and floss their teeth in the morning and before bed. Continue helping to brush their teeth until ages 4 or 5. After that, let them do it themselves, but supervise them until around 9 years of age.

Note: Both adults and children should follow these habits.

Simple Resolutions for Beginning a Happy and Healthy New Year: January 2018

At Wichita Family Dental, we believe in helping our patients obtain and maintain a beautiful smile AND keeping them educated on the preventative measures that will ensure those smiles remain happy and healthy for years to come.

As we start out 2018, Wichita Family Dental couldn’t think of a better resolution than keeping your smile in tip-top condition. Below, our family has come up with five easy resolutions that will keep you smiling well into the next New Year!

1.) Treat yourself: Go and buy that shiny new toothbrush you’ve been unconsciously **putting off** dreaming about. Not sure what to buy? Here are our tips for picking out the correct toothbrush:

Soft Bristles: Our Hygienists agree that soft-bristled brushes are best for removing plaque and debris from your teeth and along the gum line.

Comfort: Size and shape are personal preference. Pick whichever is most comfortable for you. Our Hygienists note that the best toothbrush is the one that fits your mouth and allows you to reach all teeth with ease.

Regular versus powered brushes: Regular toothbrushes get the job done just fine and have been around for centuries. On the other hand, powered toothbrushes are fun and may remove more plaque. Powered brushes can also make brushing easier. Again, we recommend you choose whichever is comfortable for you and fits your budget.

BONUS TIP: The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that you replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

 

2.) Be the Boss of Floss. The American Dental Association (2016) states that cleaning between the teeth with floss and other interdental tools is an important oral hygiene practice. This daily habit, in conjunction with regular cleanings and tooth brushing, has been shown to disrupt and remove plaque (Manchir, 2016). Need to work on your flossing technique? Below are some quick tips.

- Wind 18” of floss around middle fingers of each hand. Pinch floss between thumbs and index fingers, leaving a 1”- 2” length between. Use thumbs to direct floss between upper teeth.

- Keep a 1” – 2” length of floss taut between fingers. Use index fingers to guide floss between contacts of the lower teeth.

- Gently guide floss between teeth by using a zigzag motion. Gently wrap the floss around the side of the tooth.

- Slide floss up and down against tooth surface and under the gum line. Floss each tooth thoroughly with a clean section of floss.

 

3.) Remember: 2x a day for 2 minutes. Also, don’t forget to brush your tongue! Need some brushing up (pun intended)? Below are some quick tips for getting the most out of your brushing.

Find the right toothpaste. The brand should be ADA approved and address your particular oral challenges. These include but aren’t limited to bad breath, teeth whitening, and tooth sensitivity. You might also pay special attention to tartar control and fluoride. The ADA has found that the active ingredient ‘pyrophosphate’ in tartar control toothpaste reduces the buildup of tartar by 36%. The ADA also notes that fluoride is key to a healthy smile. It speeds up the growth of the new surface by bringing calcium and phosphate ions together and it is also preferentially incorporated into the re-mineralized surface.

Time yourself when you brush your teeth. The simple act of brushing for 2 minutes, 2 times a day is what preserves your teeth and keeps them strong. Do your kids find brushing tedious? Download a brushing app! Try Brush DJ which plays songs from your personally selected playlist for exactly two minutes. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Don’t neglect your gums. The ADA has found that more than 75% of American Adults have some degree of gum disease. With that being said, only 60% of adults have any significant knowledge about the problem. Flossing frequently and gently brushing your teeth on a regular basis will help to remove anything that can irritate your gums and cause bad breath.
