How Orthodontic Treatment Works WITH METAL BRACES

Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be traditional brackets bonded to the teeth, called braces. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the proper position.

You can choose from brackets that are clear or metallic, and in some cases, the color of your appliance. Wires are far less noticeable, and the latest materials are designed to move teeth faster with more comfort. Today, any age is a great age to wear braces!

Duration of Treatment for braces and orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment time varies and can last between one and three years. You are often the most important factor in the duration of your treatment. The more committed you are to your orthodontic treatment, the faster and more efficient it will be.

Before beginning your orthodontic treatment, your Wichita Family Dental doctor will discuss all of your options and provide an estimated timeline. Please contact our practice to schedule an appointment for a complimentary orthodontic consultation.

Wichita Family Dental now provides indirect bonding for traditional braces. Indirect bonding saves you valuable time. Plus, it improves accuracy and comfort. We can usually have you in and out of your orthodontic appointment in less than 30 minutes with all of your brackets!

Types of Braces for orthodontic treatment

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are more comfortable than ever. Made of high-grade stainless steel, the brackets on each tooth act as a handle. They move through a straight-wire sequence with each wire straightening the teeth little by little.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are clear, plastic trays that realign the teeth – tray by tray – until the desired results are achieved. Invisalign® aligners are customized to your specific misalignment and are made of an invisible, plastic material that is smooth and comfortable. Invisalign aligners are also removable, making them a discreet and convenient choice for teeth straightening. For more information about Invisalign, visit our Invisalign and Invisalign Teen pages.

Tips for Successful Orthodontic Treatment and caring for your braces

We recommend you brush and floss after every meal, even at school! Be careful to brush around your braces, angling the brush above and below the brackets to clean along the gum line. You should use stiff-end floss to get behind wires.

You should also be aware of foods to avoid while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Foods that are hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy can cause brackets to come off and should be avoided.
